Practice What You Preach

without comments

“If I have said it once I have said it a hundred times.”

How many times have we heard that line in our lifetime? I know for me, I have heard it more then I can count. I have heard it from childhood into adulthood. Now, I find myself saying it.

What are you talking about and what does this have to do with photography? I will tell you. I have preached it over and over to my clients and peers. I have counted on it happening to my clients and to the other ‘non-professionals’. What is it? The fact that there are millions of people that take photographs with their digital cameras and leave them in the camera. If they do upload them to the computer, they leave them on the computer. I have preached it over and over again, back your photos up, either on an external hard drive or on disc.

Well, I have a confession to make. I did not practice what I preached. I did not back all my photos up. The result? I lost a good majority of them when my computer crashed. I was fortunate that I had all my clients taken care of and did not lose any photos promised. But, I lost my copies of them.

I have always said that this would eventually drive back the small part of the business lost to people who because they have a digital camera, can now take those; senior pictures, kids pictures, family pictures. I have yet to run into a lot of people willing to let Uncle Joe take their wedding photos because, “my uncle has a digital camera”. They still rely on the professional for that. I really never thought that I would be one of the statistics that I would be talking about.

So, how does this effect me? Well most of what I lost, was my wedding photos. So now when a potential bride calls me about shooting the wedding and asks, “do you have a website with some of your work on it?” I can only say,

“Well no I didn’t, I was going to get that up, but now I can’t because now I have no photos.”

So now I am in the process of rebuilding my photo library and yes, this time it is backed up.

A hard lesson learned, but a valuable lesson. So, Practice What You Preach, if you are preaching it, you better be doing it.

A Day at Notre Dame

without comments

As the weather is getting nice, it is allowing Jin, Jedidiah, and I the opportunity to get out and about. The best part is that Jedidiah is at that age where everything is exciting. He will be there for awhile and that to me is just so cool. He has had a fascination with ’ducks’ for sometime now. At the site of any bird, he would instantly yell out DUCK! We have gotten him to be able (to some degree) to differentiate now and not call everything a duck, he will now say bird instead, ’sometimes’.

Today was another beautiful day, in fact it was warmer then last weekend. so, we ventured over to Notre Dame. A five minute drive and we were there. Notre Dame has two lakes on its’ property. St. Joseph’s Lake and St. Mary’s Lake. When we go to Notre Dame, one of of our favorite spots to walk are around the lakes. In fact, I enjoy running around the lakes as well, as do many other runners.

Of course I can’t pass up any opportunity to photograph my two favorite people, as I stated in the last post. So with camera and lenses in tow, we set out to the lakes so that Jedidiah could see the ducks. He was so excited, he loves to get out and be able to walk and run. He feels so independent when he is able to do so. In fact when we did carry him, which was not often, he would ask to walk by verbalizing, “Walk”.

I tell you, each week is different as this little guy grows. From what he says, his expressions, and the things he does. Each week is a new surprise for Jin and I.
So, what are we going to do next week? Well we are planning on going back to Notre Dame with bread in tow this time, so Jedidiah can feed the ducks. I know that he will be thrilled with this, and the photo opps will be many.

Last photo here for my little guy and his fascination with ducks.

A Day At The Beach

A March Day At The Beach

A March Day At The Beach

On a sunny somewhat warm day we ventured to the Indiana Dunes State Park on our way back from Chicago. Although the beach area was a bit chilly with the wind blowing off Lake Michigan, it was a nice little venture. I was able to get some great photos of my two favorite people. Besides photographing nature, there is my other favorite subjects to shoot, and in all actuality they are my favorite.

Time does not get any better then when you can spend it with the ones you love.  And being that I am a photographer, I get to use my passion to capture those I love. I am truly blessed.

My little guy was so happy and really not affected by the blowing, chilly wind. He was just having a blast. He loved the sand and the surroundings and was trying to soak it all all in and see all he could see.

These little ones are so inquisitive at this age and everything grabs their attention and amuses, and entertains them.

Besides capturing my two favorite people I was able to get a little bit of abstract photos in the mix as well. The building on site appeared to be dated, although I failed to look to see if it had a built date. However the architecture was nice and still colorful. So, I thought that I would shoot a little of it.

Abstract

So there you have it. A day spent with loved ones capturing photos of them and the surroundings. I always am sure to carry a camera with me. I do not always have my Nikon , but I have a little pocket camera to capture those candid, unplanned trips, or moments. I guess as a photographer, I can not resist.
